PostSubject: Fighter Size?   Fighter Size? Icon_minitimeMon Jan 23, 2012 5:27 pm

Does anyone know what size the fighters are going to be? I'm working on a ship and I'd like to conform my hangars to the proper size.

Thanks, production has begun on my Assault Carrier. I'll post some pictures soon.

That seems awfully small, unless they're drones.

Same for my fighter bays...

Well, if a player can fit in a mine cart, then fighters don't need to be that big...

Still, I have spent several hours building fighter bays for fighters that are those dimensions. If you feel like rebuilding my ships, Fr0stbyte, than by all means change the size of the fighters.

Also, fighters are attached to rails of some sort, and can be launched out of tubes, BSG style, or, the boring way, out of open hangars where there is a forcefield that could be easily broken by an enemy potshots.

Or, like in my Dreadnought, have
two hangars. It has a large (massive) bay where I'll store two to three drop
ships and a fighter bay which uses a launch tube system (however, you can only launch
one fighter at once, as the storage slots connect to a main tunnel, which leads
to the outside. Well, actually it leads to the massive hole in the middle of the
ship, which is only open on the bottom and not noticeable on the top...)

It would be cool if you had a under bay like, how the star destroyer in episode 4 , carried Tantiave IV in its underbelly.

Just built the hangar in the center and have it open on the ventral surface.

Or. you could have it open right on top of the ship. In a really noticeable way. With a sign that says "THIS LEADS TO THE MIDDLE OF THE SHIP!!". Thats how Wheatley would do it.

Now that this is cleared up, what about jets, the atmosphere based uncles of the space fighter? Will they be railed, or planes mod style?

You know how we are using rails to launch fighters? Same principle.

Personally, I would prefer our jets to be vertical takeoff/decent, but
anyway...

You could do it that way, but they'll be sitting ducks getting up to speed. Catapults and combat retrieval facilities are not necessary, but will allow fighters to move at full speed for the entirety of a battle. I think that's a nice compromise for those who want to specialize as a combat carrier.

Like they do on Battlestars? They shoot them out at high speed, and collect them afterwards in a big hangar.

Still, collecting the fighters on my ships is going to be a PAIN. You will have to reverse park them individually, even steering them into the right bay to avoid crashing.

I was totally thinking Battlestar, there.

For transport, we could make it so they automatically latch to a track once they are moving slowly enough.

Approval. We're going to do a tractor beam anyway, right? Set however many tractors in a bay as you have fighters landing in it, and give each beam's computer a frequency it's looking for. Whenever the fighter with the right frequency goes by, the beam latches on, guides it in to its' spot, and then waits for the next fighter to come along.

Yes. You'll need to see my fighter bay before we decide how
best to implement fighters though. It might help to explain what I was
thinking.

Also, the tracks that fighters run on should be able to have a four way
crossing.

i could see an exploit here. A ship within a ship within another ship. All have these railing, to boost the next ship and the next. That's actually a potential rail cannon. I can see a big @$$ ship losing a fight and the captain decides to bail, so he departs using a ship within another within another to flee.
