| I'm trying to make a kzin using Noppes' Custom NPCs mod, but I'm having some trouble. I haven't been able to find any consistent reference pictures for one (even the ones on the covers of the Man-Kzin Wars books don't look the same), so I'm going off the description in Ringworld, which reads "Rich orange fur, with black markings over the eyes, covered what might have been a very fat tabby cat eight feet tall. The fat was muscle, smooth and powerful and oddly arranged over an equally odd skeleton. On hands like black leather gloves, sharpened and polished claws slid out of their sheaths. A quarter ton of sentient carnivore..." and "Four walls of orange fur were each and every one a kzin...needle teeth bared." The texture I have right now I got by modifying the tiger skin that's included with the NPCs mod. Unfortunately it looks more like Hobbes than Speaker-To-Animals. I'm using armor to make it a bit bulkier, but it still doesn't look very good. Anyone have any ideas? I'd put up a download link for the skin, the armor files, and my clonednpcs.dat, but I'm not sure that's legal since I only modified the texture. What I have so far: - Spoiler:
The kzin compared to a player and some blocks. Eight feet tall translates to about 2 2/3 blocks, which translates to a size 7 NPC. From the back. I know the armor texture only covers half the back. I'll fix that later. [img][/img] Roughly what I'm going for. Variable-sword courtesy of CubeX2's Custom Stuff mod, quote courtesy of Larry Niven. I made the texture for the variable-sword.
So, yeah. That's it. I could use help with textures, models, or just advice. And if anyone knows of a Pierson's Puppeteer model for the NPCs mod, that'd be awesome. I don't have high hopes for that, though.

| I always pictured their ears as pointier. And Maybe that their torsos/arms were a little more top-heavy. Basically the cat-version of a werewolf... Also, I thought these might be helpful. - Spoiler:

...? I don't know what a Kzinti or what any of this is. What are they? The kzinti (singular kzin) are an alien race from Larry Niven's Known Space universe. They're massive, bipedal felinoids. You saw the description in the OP. That comes directly out of Ringworld, which is the main Known Space novel. There are also lots of books in the Man-Kzin Wars series, but I don't have access to any of those because I'm a very long way from home right now. It should be noted that although that Wikipedia article capitalizes 'kzin' and 'kzinti', Niven did not, so I'm not. - Laserbilly wrote:

- Spoiler:
I know the ears aren't quite right. Niven describes them as much thinner and fan-like, and they certainly could be pointy. I'm using the 'Furry Male' model from the NPCs mod, because it was the closest, but it's not perfect. I agree with the torso/arms thing, too, but it's the same problem. The model is a bit too tall compared to it's width for it to be perfect. Like I said, I'm already using chest and leg armor to make it bulkier, but even so it's not really enough. Thanks for the pictures, although they're not really helpful. There's no shortage of kzinti pictures on the Internet. The problem is that none of them are the same, not even the ones on the covers of the books. The first picture is yet another interpretation of them, that one more lion-like, and the other one just seems to be cat heads pasted onto a picture from Star Trek. I dunno. I'm going with the more tiger-like interpretation because it's closer to the books. Once I can get to the Man-Kzin Wars books again I'll have more and hopefully better descriptions. I deleted all the stupid posts. Please try to stay on topic.

| Oh wait, I think I remember something similar from an Analog I read. Giant walking cats and everything! Though I imagined them being more fearsome than bipedal fox | |

| Why don't you just ask if you can use/retexture the werewolf model from Mo' Creatures? That one feels pretty darn close to me. | |

The problem with that is that it takes more than that to make it work with the NPCs mod. I tried making one that used the Xenomorph model from the Alien vs. Predator mod, and it doesn't work. They aren't set up the way the NPCs mod needs them. Also, the werewolf model isn't even bipedal. It looks less like a kzin than this one does.

It's been years since I read Ringworld, but that's how I remember imagining them. Though it's possible I'm mixing it up with the Torminel from the Dread Empire's Fall series.

This is the best picture of a kzin I've found. It's not quite right, but this is roughly what I think they look like. This doesn't have the right ears, and the tail is a little odd, but it's close. This is a Mo' Creatures werewolf. They're just not the same.
