Yes, but cubes and spheres are down right UGLY. the least you could do is make a good hull for your ships.

Look at the Voxelbox, they make ships that are aesthetically pleasing and practical.

Here some suggestions:

RP2 microblocks for detailing
IC² wires as gun barrels
Railcraft iron tanks as... fuel deposit
Flan´s mod/ manus´ sci-fi-pack to fill up your hangars
...whatever you want...
