hahaha that would make my day! Hope my guns can detect when a ship has lost it's ability to stop... or if a noob forgot to put it in... Though if you are in desperate need to stop and don't have the fuel to you can always skim off the tops of planets atmospheres... Then you can't maintain enough speed to stay out of the planet's gravitational field and will crash... So, outa fuel you are screwed.. unless you can get help. You could use emergency thrusters to put the ship in a stable orbit. Then at least you won't run into the boundary of the system.

| What if we don't use fuel-based engines? What if we use Ion engines, which use electricity? Combined with solar panels on the hull or a fission-fusion combined nuclear reactor, that means infinite engine power.
And Ion engines are actually already used on some satellites.

ION ENGINES NEED FUEL(Hydrogen) TOO. IF THEY DONT WHERE DO THE IONS COME FROM? Hydrogen's not heavy enough to be used as a propellant. The best is xenon, because it ionizes easily and is heavy enough to not use a huge amount of it, however it is in shot supply, so either mercury, bismuth, or argon is used instead. An ion thruster needs electricity in order to function, which, in the future, may be supplied by a fusion reactor, which fuses isotopes of hydrogen together and harvests the resulting energy.

| Because to create xenon, you basically need a supernova. And supernovas are the most powerful force known in the universe. And you don't want to be causing them in your pretty little fusion reactor. | |

Anyways, deutrium and tritium FTW. Yes, those fuse rather nicely.

The reaction that causes the expansion of gasses in a firearm does not use any atmospheric oxygen at all. I don't think that a bullet would travel much faster in space than in atmosphere. The lack of friction wouldn't help very much, but the bullet would keep it's velocity until it hit something. Eh, we don't really need to know anyways. But then how would we wage space wars? With space age weapons i.e. laser beams, plasma weapons, and the like. Who wants to shoot a normal gun? another problem is that newton said that "every action have a opposite reaction" that means that if you fire a gun in space the recycle will be pushed back with the same force as the bullet. and that means if you fired a huge 2000MM gun in space. you have a new engine
