| Okay, so today CERN announced that they have successfully identified a new boson with characteristics matching those of the Standard Model Higgs boson with 99.99994% certainty. Why is this important? Because theoretically, the ability to manipulate these little guys could allow for Mass Effect-style FTL travel and related technology. Practically, it's much the same as ME's 'element zero', but much harder to activate. I'll skip all the physics behind it, but it could allow us to create temporary bubbles of no mass space that would allow for an infinite velocity.
TL;DR-a particle may have been discovered that could let us move through space as fast as we bloody well please. | |

Exactly. The main problem is that, again like in ME, we would need a relay network to allow the objects being sent to stop at their desired location. And we can't yet manipulate the things, because we only just maybe found them. | |

It SHOULD be more like Mass Effect's FTL and mass relays, as stated above, although it could also technically be used for artificial gravity, creation of black holes/wormholes, the list goes on. I wouldn't expect anything of the sort for at least a century, but it's a start. | |
