This makes me feel more vulnerable than I've ever felt.

Tip - avoid profanity, while LJS seems to be on hiatus, he may return with a vengeance. And crack down. On cursing.

Watched it. In Austria, to get catastropy reaction protocolls, you have to tune into government broadcast (which costs money and if you don't pay, you're basically doomed- unless you're one of those people who still have a radio.

It's a bit late now, but I found a better version:

I am not sure whether Austria's location between the 'former' western and eastern block is making me feel secure right now.
Fun speculation aside, a friend of mine who was in army intelligence back in the 80s says that no one actually thought ICBMs would ever be used in a mutual destruction thing. They did think NATO vs USSR would produce something like the setting for twilight 2000, less apocalyptic and more dark ages.

BTW, I checked on Nukemap and found out my hometown is only endangered if China bombs Munich while the wind is blowing from the west.

...yeah, we're not getting out of WWIII alive.
There was a times in 1961, 1979, and 1980 where hardware glitches or failures alerted NORAD to fake soviet attacks. Every time, instead of retaliating, they waited for external confirmation that these attacks were actually taking place.
Then there was a time in 1983 when relations were particularly tense, where a malfunctioning early warning system in the Soviet Union sent out two separate launch warnings. Both times, the officer on duty dismissed the alarm based on his own judgement.
Also in 1995, there was a missile test near Russia who's announcement weeks before got lost somewhere along the line. The Russian president nearly ran out the clock without returning fire.
I'm not saying it isn't ridiculous that we still have these weapons ready to go, but there have been many times in the past the those in charge have had the opportunity to use them, during a absurdly paranoid era when everyone assumed nuclear war was on the table, and every one of those times the people in charge have exercised restraint and sensibility.

Well imagine now that this officer in charge happens to be a North Korean fanatic or an Iranian islamist ... In both cases don’t expect healthy judgment.

Oh yeah, that reminds me... You guys can't have nukes anymore. Hand them over.

good news: no strategic target anywhere near me bad news: caught between fronts, no matter what the parties are (Austria's just to the east of several NATO-countries...)

Don't worry NATO won't last too long, it was a dead idea from the moment there was no USSR left to threaten. The most probable nuke threads are again coming from the fanatic countries the likes of North Korea, I'd also consider Pakistan even though they keep nukes just to counter India ...

On that topic, the most ethical weapons ever propably are the one used to intercept/disintegrate nukes in-flight.

Good news: I live in a very secluded area. Bad news: This secluded area I live in is within 150 miles of 4 - 5 major cities, and at the same time would be difficult to leave in the event of a disaster. Hmm. Would you rather die slowly from radiation poisoning, or near-immediately in a nuclear fireball?
News aside, I found some interesting stuff. The largest Chinese ICBM warhead currently in service is the Don Feng 5, with an explosive yield of 5.5mt. The largest American warhead in service is only 350kt.
I am disappoint. But it still beats North Korea (6 - 40kt in the form of a conventional bomb, unconfirmed as of yet).
EDIT: So it turns out North Korea got a hold of some sort of EMP superweapon. Fucking shit, man.
