What happens if the real zombie apocalypse doesn't end up with shambling zombies or running zombies, but zombies who can use firearms and operate machinery? Through your incessant preparing, you've doomed us all.

PostSubject: Re: Survivalist Guide for a under-age   Survivalist Guide for a under-age Icon_minitimeTue Oct 22, 2013 11:01 pm

1.) Anything that can be lidded can store water. Water bottles are a first, get like water jugs or THOROUGHLY clean out milk jugs and use that, etc. As long as the water is protected from the outside, it should remain drinkable, as long as no contaminants get in. I would suggest getting a water purifier, or if that isn't an option, you can boil water, catch the steam, and re condense it. I heard 2 drops of iodine also helps, for a bottle from an uncertain source, but not positive.

2.) Urban situations are very tricky. It really depends on the situation. As a rule, heavy urban zones are usually to be avoided. Places like grocery stores, gun stores, police stations, etc. are going to be hot-spots; Everyone will likely go there. Avoid them if you can. Firearms are best acquired from other sources, preferable before the survival situation. Also, firearms are only to be used in desperate circumstances, as firing one WILL give your position away, unless you have a silenced one. Go for melee weapons or one such as a bow; with sufficient training and aim, they are just as deadly as a bow. In a city, avoid major streets. Try to take sewer routes or alley routes through a city if you can.

Additional city tips: water sources are often common in parks and other buildings, and with proper purification, you can use these. When getting food, eat perishable items ASAP and leave the non-perishable items for later consumption. Try to get seeds for a garden if you can. The roofs of buildings can be excellent strongholds, but not for long, as time and weathering will quickly destroy the buildings without maintenance.

I really don't know why you're asking this- these tips are all I've got, and even then.

There's a book out there called The 2oz. Backpacker. It's a short pocket-sized guide to backpacking and general wilderness survival and safety. Most of the basic survival and first aid concepts should be applicable to an urban environment.

If you want to store water, there are many options. If you're in a hot environment, I would recommend against storing it in plastic containers; thin plastic tends to be very slightly permeable to gaseous water, and some of it may evaporate out. Also, the chemicals in the plastic tend to seep into the water if it gets warmer than about 85 degrees for too long. If you're in an average or cool environment, plastic is fine. Bathtubs and toilet cisterns work decently, provided you scrub them thoroughly before filling them.

As for weapons, there are as many options as there are ways to die in a post-apocalyptic city. If you need a compact rifle as a general deterrent and small-game hunting tool, I'd recommend the Henry AR-7; it's a reliable .22 takedown rifle that can be stored in its own stock. A good quality utility knife is always a handy weapon / tool; I'd recommend this if you want a locking-blade multitool, or this if you just want a really solid plain-edge knife.

1. Find a bear.
2. Train the bear.
3. You should now have a trained bear. Use it wisely.

A petrol/diesel or gas generator is nice if you want electricity. Solar panels are also an option, but not as reliable.
If you really want to prepare for something with possibly semi-catastrophic effects, a really massive solar storm is estimated for the end of the year.
It will probably create a blackout in large parts of the world, some scientists believe it might last for as long as between a month and half a year, but I doubt that.
Still, if it were to happen, you'll see how important electricity is to society.

Those are the sort of scientists you find praising the wonders of homeopathy.  Anyone can call themselves one so long as no one bothers to question it.

Solar storms are a regular occurrence based on the Sun's 11 year cycle and, if we're being generous, we can predict activity a couple days to maybe a week in advance.  The idea that the big one is coming this time is tabloid BS.

What might have that effect, though, is the Earth's poles reversing.  The poles reverse a few times every million years, with the last one taking place about 41,000 years ago.  During a 250 year period during that shift the magnetic field was only about 1/20 of what it is now.  If that happened today it would destroy all our unshielded electronics.  We're probably hundreds of thousands of years away from the next one, but nobody knows when the shift will actually happen, or even how much warning we will have. My guess, though is it'll be on the order of decades or centuries before it gets really bad, so stocking up now probably won't help all that much.

Get, a farm near a stream in the middle of nowhere. If you need to build a fence, do so.

Well, what I've read is that it's the most powerful one since 1859.
Here's the first article I found about it, not exactly the same as I've read though.

In any form of apocalyptic situation, I am completely screwed Very Happy I live in the middle of nowhere so would likely starve, the most survivablish piece of clothing I own is an uninsulated leather jacket, and my first reaction would be to save my laptop xD

Our house has a propane generator and a tank with enough gas to last 3 months of constant propane usage, so we'd be fine long enough to prepare. My first reaction would probably to wonder whether or not the generator kicked on due to a normal power outage, or an apocalyptic disaster that will kill us all. I live about 2 miles from the nearest Dollar General, and 15 miles from the nearest town, so looting food would be a non-issue. And we're on the side of a mountain, so no zombies for us.

I'm actually closer than that to a town, but I don't really know my way around it :3 I never really got the concept of doomsday prepping, as even if an apocalyptic event did occur, I don't really want to live in a world without the comforts it would take away Very Happy

My only problem in an apocalyptic situation would be certain supplies.
We already have basic stuff like knives, hand-powered lamps, clothing etc. etc.
We also have a nice supply of wood for heat, for power we have a petrol generator in our cabin in the mountains, the possibility of zombies is at about .1%, and for food we can just hunt moose or kill cows.
For anything else though, the closest town is 30 kilometers away and closest city I think is about 100 kilometers away, but I'm not too certain about that.

My dad was a survivalist back in the cold war, so there's his crap. And I went through a phase back when I was 13-15, so I have a lot of military surplus stuff(murrika). Now I just want to move out to the mountains and start a little farm, that's the best chance I'd have for surviving.

The good side is that the aliens will propably attack highly populated areas first, so living on the countryside definetly gives you time to set up for guerilla warfare.

Man if aliens manage to get to here and crush us, do you really think they would bother fight with every single human individually ? They will just roast you together with the planet. If these aliens couldn't wipe us out in 24 hours they are  disgrace for alien kind.

Zombies: Urban: Grab as much food, water, and if you can guns and ammo as well as other necessary supplies. Then hightail it out there.

Zombies: Rural: Same as above except without leaving. Melee weapons only. Set up away from town but not to far away. Once necessary supplies are located and looted start clearing out the town. Move silently and quickly. Set up safehouses in and around town. Lean to hunt and/or farm.

Aliens: Urban: Pray to whatever god you like that they come in peace.

Aliens: Rural: Build before hand a bunker. Live in bunker. Expand bunker. Try not to be spotted entering said bunker. Chose live in bunker forever or try to beat the Aliens.

If they were just going to nuke the planet into oblivion, why would they come in the first place? There's a nuclear rockets(or whatever it's called) article on this.

fr0st, A pole reversal isn't a flick-of-the-wrist idea. It happens over time.

What usually happens is that each pole gets progressively weaker until it is almost nothing, then they switch as it passes nothing and regains strength. It's like a parabolic function, -X^2, except the polarity isn't reversed. The main problem with this is that there's no magnetic field protecting us, which means cosmic rays and the sun's CME's won't be blocked, so the atmosphere will absorb the brunt of the damage. This would result in problems, yes, but the poles do not reverse like you would reverse the polarity of a sci-fi raygun. It's gradual enough to not cause lasting harm on it's own, but sudden enough that we need to be prepared for it.

Because I just recently checked on it, these are the statistics for my palace thing.

~5600lifetime guards, who have been raised to protect me and this place

~10000 various guards, soldiers in nearby bases, and police nearby.

There are about 3000 military grade flight suits, which can go supersonic and have full combat abilities.

There are 72 anti-air emplacements, all of which are always operated.

The sub-level here has a naturally fed cistern, and is stocked with an astounding 12 years worth of food for about 800 owls.

There are also an extremely large number of small arms weapons, heavy weapons like rockets, and also 20 ultra-heavy emplaced cannons, which can demolish city blocks with a single shot.

This is also not including the 150 foot tall walls, various maze-like corridors, and the fact that a portion of the building is inside a mountain.

Oh, we're taking into account our palaces as well?

I have 300,000 undead clones of Milan Fras, 30,000 templar knights armed with FN FAL battle rifles and powered armour, 80 armored cavalry battalions on loan from Vladimir Putin's Russia™, 40,000 UD-4L Cheyenne Dropships, and 100 Conestoga class light cruisers in parking orbit.
