I think allowing people to dig in using certain tools would actually be a really good idea gameplay wise, just because its future themed doesn't mean the tactics have to be completely different, but this doesn't need to be added straight away.

Nothing we do is ever going to compare to an actual FPS. It isn't meant or expected to, and it's a bit strange to even suggest that it should. You play Flan's Mod because that's what you want to play. If you want to play BF3 or any other real FPS, by all means do so. But saying that we shouldn't do something because we won't be able to do it as well as something that has had millions of dollars poured into it to do that and only that isn't a useful contribution.

BF3 doesn't have laser guns, we automatically win
