PostSubject: Equivalent Exchange   Equivalent Exchange Icon_minitimeMon Dec 09, 2013 2:43 am

Year: 145,045 CE (lost calendar), fifteenth era of Reconstruction (lost calendar), 306 year of the Third Age.

Location: Gaiga

HISTORY

Many, many thousands of years ago, the various races roamed the void between stars and founded cities on distant worlds. Their nations' lands were measured in stars, their wars tore the galaxy and obliterated planets. Technology was pushed along by war. The sciences were pushed beyond the comprehension of natural life. Biomechanical Intelligences were created to design the weapons, guided by the wishes of the nations. In the Last Galactic War, diseases were engineered by a combatant nation, biological agents that were meant to change the infected into carriers that would either destroy or infect more worlds. Instead of ceasing after the enemy was decimated, the disease continued to spread. The remaining inhabitants of the galaxy recognized the threat and built an intelligence greater than any before it, the physical size of a planet. It was built only to find a way to defeat the blackness that was spreading, that had sliced through the defenses of the Old Terran Union, and NeoRome, and the Batiss Combine as if they were paper, that had nearly exterminated the Strigiforme.

It succeeded.

Within its first minutes of life, the machine concluded that the easiest way to eliminate the Disease was to eliminate its method of travel, the various FTL drives, and the Disease's only way of creating weaponry, the independent computers that still functioned on dead worlds. The only way to do this, it decided, was to alter the laws of the Universe itself. The quantum mechanics that allowed the drives to cross vast areas of space suddenly ceased to function. Quantum trinary processes of the manufactured Intelligences stopped cycling. The planet-sized computer that had been designed to save life chose to sacrifice itself, as well as all of the other AIs, but before its death, before it withdrew its fingers from the cosmic loom, it added one different bit of code. This one was not meant for destruction, but as a gift for the beings that created it. A small redemption from a god to assure that its legacy would not just be of death.

Along with every computer and FTL drive, the fields surrounding certain minds were altered. Energies surrounding atoms were made to flow through systems seemingly much more mundane than what they had been. Matter and energy were made to obey laws that could only be described as magic. Unfortunately, without their technology and interstellar abilities, intelligent life was struck down to their planets.

All of this is forgotten.

GAIGA

A few generations attempted to rebuild, but, separated as they were from all others, they were unable. Generation after generation, still unsure of how to advance, devolved into cruder societies. When they managed to build their civilizations, they fought among themselves and were torn down. Eventually, through the millennia, they began to discover the gifts that the dead intelligence had left them. They harnessed and guided the forces that flowed, the artificially-implanted processes that they now simply accepted as natural truth.

Now, Gaiga has matured into a planet housing several nations, all built upon Alchemy and sometimes separated by its different aspects. Its culture is a mixture of those of many races. Advanced technology is not discovered, but alchemy serves in its place. Governments often use masters of the Alchemical Arts as soldiers or other special government operatives. Since there are only few masters, the state operatives are awarded certain privilege that ordinary citizens are not.

Our Nation is called Ixani. It is a nation that has no tendency toward a certain aspect. Our city is the Capital: Ix.

Ix is divided into several radial sectors.
Center-The center of Ix contains the Capital buildings, the Emperor's Palace, and various other government buildings. It is surrounded by the city's inner wall.

Inner City: Inner city houses the four Alchemical schools in Ix, as well as the more important portions of the city. The inner city is guarded by the Main wall.

-Inner North: The City's hospital and largest nature reserve is here, as well as one of the four Alchemical Schools: the Life School, where the arts regarding the body and nature are.
-Inner West: The Energy School is located here. It teaches the flow of energy and how to influence it. This sector also houses the military academy and barracks.
-Inner South: Facing the City's only port, the inner south sector is encloses the Fluid School campus. Transmutation of ice, steam, air, changing of weather and the motion and behavior of water are studied. Several religious temples are also located in the Inner South sector.
-Inner East: Transmutation of solid matter is studied at the Stone School. The inner business districts and most manufacturing facilities can also be found here.

Outer City: The outer city is surrounded by the small external wall.

-Outer north: External shops and residencies.
-Outer East: Mainly homes. The main passenger train station is here.
-Outer South: The Ixian Sea and Ix Harbour.
-Outer West: The feet of the Ixian Mountains are just a short walk away. There are also many homes gathered at the edge of the walls.

Suburban Stretch: Scattered residences separating the Rural area from the Metropolis of Ix.

OTHER PLACES

Cuuyth: A large nation to the southeast of Ixani whose name is derived from ancient memories of the Strigiforme capital. Within Cuuyth are the oldest cities in modern Gaiga, some dating back as far as 10,000 years. These cities are built on the remnants of the ruins of a colony city, their residents hold the ruined, deteriorated examples of excavated technology in almost religious regard, and seek to become more like their ancestors by advancing their own technology. Cuuythian engineering is some of the best in the world. They denounce alchemy unless it is used to manufacture or operate machines, and often look down upon those that choose alchemy over mechanism. Cuuyth has spawned several anti-alchemy extremist groups.

ALCHEMY

Alchemy is the science of deconstructing matter and reconstructing it into something else. Equivalent Exchange is the cardinal law of alchemy: if something is to be created, a debt of something of equal value is owed. Transmutation circles are the easiest way to create a specific item or material. Anyone that has knowledge of the alchemical arts can perform alchemy with the aid of the focusing circles, but only certain individuals can use the arts without. Alchemy also refers to the movement of energy through substances, and the creation of energy. Similar symbols can be used for this kind of alchemy.

Aspects: Alchemy is often divided into aspects, like Flame, Stone, Steel, etc. They all operate off of the same principles and methods, but usually an alchemist will be schooled in one field, and masters are usually addressed by their aspect of mastery.

Alchemical Energy: Due to the Law of Equivalent Exchange, all transmutations and energy projections require an input. This input can be a substance or an amount of stored alchemical energy. Energy can be stored in some items, like spirit lamps, soul gems and Philosopher's Stones. A storage item can be overfilled or overused. If an object is overfilled with energy, then it will rupture and all of the energy will spill out at once, often with catastrophic consequences. The larger the amount of energy, the larger the explosive force. The only known object that can store an unquantifiable amount of energy is the Philosopher's Stone. When an object is overexpended, it will sometimes break apart and dissolve, robbed of the energy that was holding it together, or simply die.

Rules:
-Did you read the entire OP? Read the entire OP. I apologize about the length of the entire OP.
-Be creative.
-Not too much godmodding.
-Easy on the OP, let other people have some fun, too.
-What I say goes, but I'm giving you the majority of creative license with this one.
-If you have a suggestion, suggest it.
-All races are allowed, but if your race previously had any kind of psychic anything, it doesn't anymore (unless alchemy).
-You are not constrained to FC canon.
-No references to past, it's a HUNDRED THOUSAND YEARS IN THE FUTURE.
-You can have a robot, Proto. Magical robot.
-You can add to the list of alchemical items as we go.

-FEEL FREE TO ADD NATIONS, AS I ONLY HAVE ONE AT THE MOMENT. WE ALL START IN THE SAME CITY.

Note: I highly recommend Fullmetal Alchemist.

Also note: This is kind of steampunkish/renaissance/medieval kind of thing. Guns are a go, some electricity, flight, etc. Hell, you can even have spaceflight, just maaaagical space flight.

Awesome.

Name: Ryl Terrannus

Race: Human (mostly)

Gender: Male

Age: 24

Bio tidbits (height, weight, whatever. Optional): Erm... 180 cm tall, 60 kg. Sure.

Personality: Very, very calm and collected. Never reacts impulsively. Is funny, but tends more towards cynical and snarky.

Aspect(s): [Not Applicable]

Skill level in aspect(s): 1/10 - focuses on a different field.

Combat skill level: 8/10 - martial artist.

Other skills: Part of a splinter group that focuses on using the mind rather than the alchemical exchange - uses mental energies to accomplish things, often at the cost of his sanity (temporarily) or his emotions (semi-permanent).

Flaws/Weaknesses: Near-inability to use alchemy. Also goes completely insane at times.

Profession/Class/Whatever: Mind Master (Psionic d00d - not nearly as capable as FC-canon races.) Hires out as an assassin at times.

Starting location: Outer South City, in a msall residence by the harbour.

Background: Growing up, he disliked his lack of alchemical prowess, but sill found he had a fine mind. Thus, he decided to focus on his mind instead of the alchemical aspects.

Music: Will post later.

Image: Might post later.

*A little magical device that assists him in focusing mental abilities.
Note that all of this can be wiped and replaced if you want, Mercury.

Inscribed over the door to the Strigiforme building was the doctrine of the Strigiforme.

"Nothing is ever forgotten"

The Strigiforme, especially on this world-this one had the largest population- was to hoard knowledge and technology, carefully logging it and recording their inner workings. As a result, the Strigiforme were the most advanced along the old line of technology. The Strigiforme however, didn't use alchemy beyond the most basic applications. They relied on their recorded technology, not the alchemy of most races, and many Strigiforme fringe groups were militantly against alchemy, and the main body of the Strigiforme were dangerously neutral at best. The Strigiforme capital city is Cuuyth, and very few leave their bounds. Those that do risk anti-alchemist assassin and banishment.

Yeah, this might not work in the no references to the past, but whatever.

Name: Alpha

Race: Soul converted NSCD MKVII engineer rig

Gender: robot

Age: ~100000 physical, only been active for around a week.

Bio tidbits: not so much in the way of height and weight, but the MKVII rigs were equipped with a plasma cannon, welding laser and flight unit, which are all now defunct and useless, but the twin wrist mounted jigsaws are good

Personality: amnesiac, calm, difficult to anger, possesses some inherent fear of something called a lamentor, whatever that is.

Aspects: defunct flight unit, plasma cannon and welding laser, may be removed or replaced with magic version.

Skill level in aspects: 1/10 most of them are useless anyway

Combat level: 9/10 formerly cybernetic brain (converted to soul) plus high level sensors (also converted to use magic) plus jigsaws means Alpha is good at hand to hand combat, but will rarely engage.

Flaws: Alpha's conversion from cybernetic to soul hasn't been exactly perfect, he lost all his memory, and knows f all about magic, doesn't like it.

Profession: friggin robot master

Starting location: Way out South, in some random ass crater.

Background: ok this is my attempt to explain stuff in concordance with the backstory:

Alpha was the former leader of the NSCD, having access to the (second) most powerful computer in existence, the ARKbrain. The ARKbrain was able to predict what the planet sized computer would decide to be necessary, and was able to predict the outcome, but could not understand how it would be carried out. When it was realised that none of the NSCD would survive the machines actions, it was decided that the leader Alpha, would have his mind converted into soul form, so that he may survive. However, the process was far from perfect, and robbed Alpha of his memory, and some of his functionality. The soul powered version of Alpha was sent to the planet that would become Gaiga, crash landing there moments before the machine rewrote the laws of the universe. However, Alpha could not be released from his stasis, and was trapped in stasis until the components holding him in stasis decayed to the point they stopped functioning. Alpha crawled out of cave that had formed around his ship, and onto the surface of Gaiga, with only a few nonsensical scribblings to indicate his past.

Name: Jarvis Alenko

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Age: 21

Bio tidbits (height, weight, whatever. Optional): N/A

Personality: Cold and distant, but not uncomfortable socially, extremely (And I mean EXTREMELY) intelligent through energy and matter manipulation. Not constrained by morals.

Aspect(s): (if applicable) Energy and Matter (Basically all)

Skill level in aspect(s): /10 (If Applicable) 9 (Near master)

Combat skill level: /10 1 (Basically defenseless)

Other skills: Extremely good speaker, manipulative and persuasive, and very good with materials and energy.

Flaws/Weaknesses: Refuses to follow societal "morals", cold,

Profession/Class/Whatever: (if applicable) Advanced Manipulator, inventor.

Starting location: Inner West, military academy

Background:

Jarvis is what we would call an industrialist, and a visionary. He sees an image of the future that is similar to what was once before- most dismiss him as stupid, such things couldn't be done. But he holds onto these ideas and seeks to create them- already he produces countless components and parts from his machines, components he sells to the general populace for profit. With the money gained from these ventures, he continues his experimentation and acquires relatively rare substances.

But he has stumbled upon a mystery. With a small scale energy transmitter, he can completely transport a piece of matter across the planet nearly instantly, with the more energy inputted, the faster the transmission. But he cannot push it any farther, despite all his calculations indicating that it can go faster. The speed should be proportional to the energy inputted to the machine, reduced by the transmuted energy of the object being transferred.

He intends to find out why.

Error, accepted.

Proto: Rusty, but accepted. (like really rusty lemme get you some WD-40,000 for that)

Ach's Nation-State: Accepted, but with radical changes. I'll have the OP updated after a nap.

Luna, ponies won't really jive with the level of serious i'm going for, which is some... but if you really want to, just redo your application so that it adheres to the notice*

Fen, accepted.

Note*: Aspect does not mean avocation or equipment, it's referring to the aspect of Alchemy that your character has developed the highest skill. The alchemical specialty. ice, fire, etc.

Also note that this occurs a hundred thousand years after technology died. As you can imagine, this is a very, very long span. Almost no memory persists of that time, except for the dead machines that are occasionally excavated and degraded genetic memory.

Spoiler:

Ezbern Family [One of the Alchemy schools]

The Magecraft of the Einzbern family, which follows the Thaumaturgical School of Alchemy, is based on the creation and refinement of substances and the focus of their studies lies solely in the structural manipulation of precious metals. They know healing Magecraft, but as alchemists this is used not for the sake of recovering the flesh of injured people, but rather to lessen the great burden felt by a subject who received an organ that was tempered with magical power and help his body get used with the newly transplanted organ. Because with the craft of the Einzbern magical energy becomes easily dispersible, buildings that sealed off with soil or stone are the ones most desired by them to install a workshop.

The Einzberns are well known for being excellent producers of homunculus. Even the ones that are regarded as failures by their creators are still superior to even 100 magi. The Einzbern homunculi have their functions determined during the design stages and are born with bodies and minds optimized to perform their purposes.

Funfight: Accepted and welcome to the Forums(?). I'm honored that you've chosen my RP to make first contact. Our RP is kind of like authorial DnD; we write a story based around our characters and their interactions constrained by a set of rules and guidelines. If you want some examples, look at "Cyber Punk: Night City" or "The Network" or another one of our many in the graveyard.

My character is OP because he is the tool of the GM!

Name: Falldin, AKA Coalfire

Race: Feles

Gender: M

Age: 63

Bio tidbits (height, weight, whatever. Optional): 2m tall, but often walks hunched. 90kg. Grey fur with black patterns

Personality: Reserved, he has held Master status for long enough to forsake arrogance. He is patient only to his superiors or those that seek knowledge, tends to ignore people unless they have something of value to say or wish for something of value to be said. Slow to anger, but temper can be rather explosive.

Aspect(s): Carbon, Fire, general alchemy.

Skill level in aspect(s): Carbon 10/10 (Master level), Fire 10/10 (Master level), general 7/10

Combat skill level: 7/10

Other skills: Master State Alchemist comes with the benefit of influence, still very agile despite his age.

Flaws/Weaknesses: He has only a small amount of knowledge regarding machines, status makes him a popular assassination target. Though he is highly trained in hand-to-hand combat, Falldin dislikes using his skills.

Profession/Class/Whatever: Alchemy Master, Honorary (secondary) Headmaster of Ixian School, State Alchemist

Starting location: City center, headquarters of the State Alchemists

Background: From early childhood, Falldin was very skilled with alchemy. He was enrolled in the Energy School at the age of five and was quickly promoted to Adept in the Fire aspect. He moved on to the Stone school, where he studied the alchemy of carbon, one of the most complex of the specific solid aspects. At twenty, he was offered a station as a State Alchemist, but turned it down in order to further his studies as a professor in the Ixian schools. Eventually, he rose to the rank of Master in both Fire and Carbon aspects. He was again offered a position as a State Alchemist, this time he accepted the offer. Because of his expertise in carbon and flame, he was given the pseudonym "Coalfire." Among the State Alchemists, he was trained in hand-to-hand combat. Like most of his subjects, he took to it well. After many years, he's risen to the highest rank of State Alchemists and has been awarded many honors in the Ixian School.

As it became evening the usual crowd slowly came in along with some new faces and familiar ones missing. Fire Rose sat at the bar counter, occasional sparks of magic came from her horn out of boredom. She lightened up a little when someone walked up. The person that walked up was of Avian features and looked at the height adjusting chairs.
“Can I get you something to drink?” She asked.
“Yeah, don’t really know what I want though, surprise me,” He said as he took a seat.
“I don’t do surprises you are getting the house special,” She said turning to mix the drink. “So what’s your name? I’m Fire Rose I haven’t seen you around here much,” as Rose finished speaking she turned and placed the glass in front of the Avian.
“I don’t bother with names, I’m only going to be here for a few hours tonight,” he said sipping his drink.
“It’s supposed to have a little bit of spice to it but not sure if Avians can taste it.”
“Notta” he said disappointedly.
“Alright, it’s my personal favorite but can’t work with everyone.”
“Is this a normal bar day for you? The loud but somehow peaceful chatter of a dozen voices,” He spoke looking around the pub. “And how much for the drink?”
“What? Oh, on the house. But yes it’s just another day, usually every month or so someone offers me either a shipping or hitman job,” She stood up as something caught her attention.
“Something wrong?” The unnamed Avian spoke curious.
“Yeah, I don’t tolerate fighting on my ship,” Fire Rose rasped walking over the counter and hoping onto the lower floor taking something with her.
Rose snuck her way through the small mass of people and tables toward two humans throwing punches at each other. Rose levitated a firecracker in front of her and lit it with her horn. The object let out a loud bang that caught everyone’s attention. The people fighting stopped and looked down at her.
“You two, either stop fighting or get off the ship and do so else where!” She shouted angrily pointing at the door with a hoof. One of the men left without a word, the other gave a swift kick to her side when she wasn’t looking. She let out a pitiful squeak and slid across the floor suffering several splinters. He looked around and saw one of the regulars shaking their head, a slight look of fear in their eyes. He began to walk out but the door slammed in front of him. Rose was getting back on her hooves and her horn glowed with a deep yellow. A pulse of energy hit him and drove his entire body against the wall. He pulled out a few throwing knives and sent them at Rose. The knives lodged in a quickly set up magic field and began melting, the liquid metal was dropped in nearby drinks. Fire Rose held up the shield as she walked over to him incase he decided to throw something else. When she got to him she grabbed his shirt collar with her magical grip and opened the door.
“Now get off my ship,” She said through gritted teeth. She proceeded to throw him out the door and over the deck. She turned to the others in the bar and said “Hope he can swim, I’ll get everyone with metal in their glass a new drink no charge.” She walked back to the bar and people started clapping and cheering.

Zzzzzzztt.

Failed, again. Alpha didn't exactly know what he was doing, but he had it in his head that he should be able to run this, whatever it was. He had been sitting there on a rock just outside the crater he had crawled out of for around two hours, and the only thing useful had had managed to find were these buzzing things that popped out his wrists, but he didn't really know what they were used for.

Some funny noises had been coming from due North of him, but he had not paid any attention, he had no idea that said funny noises were the coversation of a few travelling thieves that had set up camp nearby. He didn't even pay attention when they started getting a little louder.

"Oy boys, come 'ave a look at this"

"If its just another bloody rusted tin can, I'll punch you a new bloody-"

"Nah nah, this one looks almost new, I can't even tell who made it, rather unusual"

"Does it work? What's its mark"

"Can't see a mark, at least not one I know of, some funny crossed black lines in its shoulder, must be experimental"

At this point Alpha noticed the men standing there, and stood up to face them, and attempted to speak, "Zzzzt... Wha.... Zzzzt"

"Bollocks it's defective"

The Express Rail from Cuuyth pulled into the stop in Arpies, a small town in a small nation bordering the Strigiforme. The town existed primarily to service these trains on their trips to any of 8 major cities, and was therefore very concentrated around the rail line. As the train stopped, a small hatch on the roof of the luggage car opened up, and a Strigiforme popped out.

His lithe 2 and 1/4 meter body sneakily left the train yard, and made his way to the town. He was Cvyyt Kiiyr Lyykit, and he was a trained assassin. He made his way, flying and hopping, to the top of a building, conveniently overlooking the enterance to Train Car 15, where his target would soon be. He pulled out his Mk VI carbine, and looked down its scope. He waited.

He knew that all the passengers were kicked off the train for cleaning, and most went to cafés near the train for lunch. He also knew his target loved a traditional Strigiforme dish only served in one restaurant. He finally knew that because of the risk of the train hitting the cement embankment, there was a 3 meter gap that was bridged by a thin, single-file metal bridge.

The target moved into the line to enter the train.

The target was on the bridge.... A tinny pop sounded from the rifle, and the Strigiforme alchemist fell into the gap between the train and the embankment. The rest of the crowd was too busy looking at the conveniently hired, very loud, street performer that made them look away from the bridge.

Cvyyt made his way down and into his 1st class booked seat on the train back to Cuuyth, a pin feather of his target in his pack.

"Run iteration 687 again." Jarvis eyed the figure displayed on the translucent screen in front of him. An energy screen, produced-and patented- by him. The machine powering the screen lie below it, the three disks rotating and whirring in perfect synchronization with each other. Large networks of conduits and power junctions kept this machine running, all connected to thermo-electric generators buried deep in the crust. Condensers were unreliable, especially when surrounded by extremely hot magma. So the machines were made to be electric powered.

Their core function was still powered by alchemy, however.

"I said, run iteration 687 again," Jarvis said, with an irritated voice. The figure on the screen sighed.

"We've already run 687, Jarvis, and I doubt running it will add any insight..."

"I have new equipment. Run it."

"At your command." The figure turned around and began inputting multiple characters into the keypad behind him. A rumble went through the facility. "The Gyro chamber is spooling."

"Hold the power at 80% and wait until I arrive in the chamber." Jarvis pulled a lever and the screen shut down. Simultaneously, he unfolded a panel mounted on his arm, pressed a small red button, and quickly refolded it. In front of him, a steel panel slid open and a metal cylinder rose out of the floor. It's doors slid open as rails connected to the ceiling, establishing the elevator's connection to the facility network. He pulled a small lever marked 'Gyro' and the elevator shot down.

The elevator slowed down after a few seconds, and Jarvis stepped out as the doors slid open. In front of him was the main gyro chamber. Already the 8 discs were rotating within their frames- in the center of them, a dull red pulse was emitted from a small sphere. "What the hell happened?" Jarvis asked as he strolled to the control console, aware of the immense heat directly behind the reinforced glass between him and the gyros. His assistant stood nearby, obviously frightened at what was happening.

"We don't know sir, all variable are the same as last experiment, but..." his assistant trailed off.

"But what?"

"I noticed a slight resonance discrepancy as the gyros spooled up." Jarvis sighed.

"The original experiment is ruined, but this..." Jarvis motioned to the sphere. "If this is what I think it is, we have a new discovery."

"Which would be?" Jarvis pressed a few buttons and several instruments mounted on the gyros began outputting data.

"Looks like we created a miniature star. Get the data together for processing."
