| I've made a Mechwarrior thread before but it never got anywhere... NO GUTS NO GALAXY. For anyone that doesn't know, the Battletech games are some in which the player pilots a huge, multi-ton war machine bluh bluh we all know what a 'mech is. MechWarrior Online is the latest installment in the franchise, it was just fully released last month. It is also one of the best, even though it lacks a story. In MWO, players are pitted against each other in two teams of three 4-person squads, or lances. As the "Thinking man's shooter," as it has been called, tactics are often the deciding factor of games. If one wishes, they can take position as the Company Commander or command one of the three lances. Unlike the 8-year-olds that still play CoD, players of MWO will often listen to orders and be somewhat cohesive in executing them without accusing the commander of being addicted to penis. Personal tactics are also very important. Mechs that players purchase with C-Bills (in-game money) or MC (you have to buy these with actual money) are very customizable. Weapon systems, armor, engines, and other equipment can be exchanged to better fit the player's style, whether it may be long-range sniper, missile support, brawler, or scout. Each mech chassis has different weapon hardpoints, strengths, and weaknesses. Light mechs, like the Locust, are usually fast and maneuverable, but weak when it comes to weapons. Assault mechs generally are shit for speed, but are like well-armed fortresses. tl;dr: Bipedal tanks, boom boom, tactics, fun, download it. OH, AND ITS FREE YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR NOT PLAYING. (Well, certain 'mech variants and camo patterns require MC, but they're not important) Download at http://mwomercs.com/ | |

| Ah yes, Battletech. Where 30-ton mechs are considered light and technological advancement has been at a halt for hundreds of years. | |

Everybody's doing it. Note: You will suck when you first start playing unless you've played a tank-style game or another Mechwarior game. The style is rather unique.

| I played World of Tanks for a couple of weeks, does that count?
The prospect of working with people that actually work cohesively on a regular basis is irresistible.

| I just played some MWO... I actually kind of like it. I have no idea what the purpose of the clan things are in this game, but we should make a clan thing. | |

Probably, if it's throttle and the turret moves independently from the... the... wheely spinny go thing. Tracks. The main body of the tank. - Solar112 wrote:

The different nations are from the Battletech canon, which is really really complicated and unimportant. - Robotnik wrote:

Goody. @All: There is now a movement tutorial for mechs, it can be found on the main menue thing under the big teal launch button. I suggest everyone go through that before you dive into a game.

Possibly, but not because you play Frigate. I played MWO, I sucked. My KD was like .04. Advice is welcome.

I played MWO, I sucked. My KD was like .04. Advice is welcome. If you'd never played another MW before you started it would have taken a while to get used to. Until you have enough C-bills to get your own mech you have to play with the trial ones, which all suck. I would recommend getting something cheap and light to start out, like a Commando or Jenner, because you should be able to get it pretty early. Then you can get accustomed to the mech bay and editing. If you don't mind waiting and saving up, though, you'll probably get more kills in a medium. You get a C-Bill boost your first 25 games. Spend them wisely.

| I played one game with the trial light mech. It was okay, but you basically have zero stopping power and these (what I presume are) heavies just spam missiles and chuckle as you desperately weave in buildings to lose them.
Tried again with the trial med. mech, ganked within a minute of entering the game lol. We need to get together.

| @Keon: Go to the "Mechlab" and select "Loadout." From the loadout screen you can change your mech's weapons and level of armor. What's the chassis and variant? I can suggest a payload. E: Faction and the store haven't been put in yet. I guess. You can change your faction affiliation from the MWOmercs page.
@Tiel: Most of the default loadouts suck, especially for the light classes. Luckily, this month you have Champion mechs for trial, and they don't suck quite as hard. You won't kill anything with the Spider (machine guns are useless), but you can get some points in Conquest or annoy the hell out of slower mechs with the Spider's higher agility. Your best bet is probably the Atlas RS-C for racking up C-Bills, but the Dragon with its long-range Gauss Rifle and the Blackjack are pretty good choices as well. E: I hate LRM spam.
Note for purchasing the first mech: Ballistic hardpoints on a light mech is like giving an ant a rifle. The only thing you can put on them is a machine gun array. If you're getting something under 35 tons, make sure its a variant that has plenty of missile or energy hardpoints. Medium lasers are one of the most effective things you can get- 1 ton for 5 damage, but all lasers have high heat. Streak SRMs are also good, but require ammo.
I think we have enough people for an entire lance! My title is catsonmeth, as usual. Add me to your friends list, I'll probably be on about 20:00 EST.
E: Invited Keon and Tiel.

| Update on my current standing in the game.
I have a Locust and a Commando. I've upgraded the Locust's structure, amour and engine. I don't think I've gotten around to upgrading the Commando yet.
This may be the only MMO I like...
