The Gerengi are roughly humanoid mammalian arthropods1 native to the dead planet Yhul. They are considered a galactic faction, though their population is less than one billion and have little say in galactic government. Most Gerengi live aboard the migrant Fleet of Yuhl, which is comprised of several colony ships and warships, along with some smaller boats. They hold only three small colonies on the outskirts of the galaxy, which have a combined population of five million.
History
The Gerengi evolved into the niche of dominant species on the Halor supercontinent of Yhul. They developed quickly after their agricultural revolution and, in less than a thousand years, developed FTL travel. Fifty years after the Garengi were introduced to the galactic community, Hareng began its final stages of life, threatening to wipe out all life on Yhul. The Gerengi evacuated their planet, taking all they could carry. They managed to conserve a portion of Yhul's biosphere, though much much was lost. Currently, a century after the evacuation, the Gerengi are still rebuilding their civilization and cloning organisms from samples and codes of those that were left to die.
Society and psychology
The Gerengi are quite similar to humans psychologically, though they have the ability to set aside much of the emotional portion of their mind in order to focus on logical reasoning. This allows them to process large amounts of information. They hold life in the highest regard, as seen in their efforts to clone extinct species. Their numbers and the segmentation of their population due the Fleet allow a loose democratic republic in which the leaders of each ship speak for the whole of its population.
Physical characteristics
These organisms possess characteristics of both mammals and arthropods. Having internal and external skeletal structures, complex nervous system, jointed appendages, stiff hair-like sensory structures, and vocal communication.
