It checks the words on the webpage.
If you (warning, mildly crude language ahead.) made a topic with the words "Sex in hyperspace" and variants of that theme, you would get interesting ads.

I have an add for a mining job. Before that, it was for a cruiser liner.
I actually found one good add on here: it was for an online Lego- creator. It was fun for five minutes, and works in-browser. And without any viruses!
