To store about 7 billion humans in 7 billion stasis pods, each in a 2x2x2 M cube, we need a worldship 4km by 4km by 4km. Thus space travel is easy. With a budget of the US millitary, once stasis pods are invented, we can hurry up colonizing. Assuming you need 1000 people to colonize a planet, 8000 cubic meters fits in a 20 meter by 20 meter by 20 meter cube. So to expand to space, we need stasis pods and a 20 meter by 20 meter by, say 60 meter for recreation area when you are awoken every 100 years, plus food storage and stuff needed to start a colony. Oh, add motors and an autopilot. So, yeah. Invent stasis and reasonable speed drives, and we can go to spaaaaaaaace.

And what is with the Humans which are bigger than 2 meters Razz Razz Razz Razz

Yeah, just invent stasis pods, no problem!

just a few hundred years of taking apart our DNA and figuring it out, then being lucky enough to have the unused ability to hibernate! nothing hard!

oh, AND facing the massive engineering problems of building a giant cube in space, and finding a habitable planet with the methods we use now.

not to mention avoiding collapse of society.

I don't think world ships are the answer, best case, they are stop-gap(sort of) measures to colonize the universe, with almost the same effect as going to a different universe entirely. it would cut that group of humanity off from our home world, and everything we knew, not to mention that the only way it would help would be removing *some* overpopulation concerns, nothing really permanent.

Interesting point though.

You could do what we did, with a 100% efficient enclosed environment... Although it is still in travel, it will only seem like a few years to the travelers, it has been 79 to us, with another 568 to go... If you didn't know, our sun is far out...

Wow, so magic can make things 100% efficient yet not speed up a very slow ship?

I don't think we understand what most of it does, though, and I doubt we'll have a latent(I think that's the word I want) ability to hibernate.

Very advanced science, having plants, animals, ect in a a large environment with artificial gravity. I'm not surprised you would think its magic*.

*Magic implying science advanced enough that primitive species would mistake it for supernatural occurrences.

Indeed. By the time the Ancients arrived back on Earth after Atlantis, their technology could be mistaken for magic, even by today's technology.

Interesting point here, I think it is more likely we will colonize Mars and the Moon, move on to some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and then at some stage figure out FTL travel.

I consider magic something that warps the laws of the universe, not like some loophole we haven't found, but like saying humans can switch their DNA at will (long, true story)

anyway, you have your special brand of owlsanity (ugh) and a specialized universe, so whatever.

I'm not insane: I'm owlsane!

Ok, so why did you call a 100% efficient ship magic. It's not even a loophole you haven't found! Your on a wondrous example of it right now!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOLD UP.

You're proposing to transport the 7 billion humans that are currently bringing about their own destruction to another planet so they can do it over again? Except now it'll turn two lush habitable planets into massive wastelands instead of just one?

You cant take 7 billion people in a 4km long ship. The GTD Orion was 2 KM long and had a crew of 10,000 ... 4km long is just a size of a small city ...

Yea, the ship that transported just a billion of us was about 2 km... And most species of us are smaller than you...

Well yea, when you mess up your planet what do you do? Find a new one to hang a few thousand years and move on to the next

When you mess up your planet, do you wait around for your own destruction, or do you find another one?

4km ^ 3.
64 cubic km. Each guy has 8 cubic meters of space to fit in.

DO THE MATH!

And, Pat, this is for when the sun explodes, or when we need to colonize. It isn't unreasonable.

Anyway, the more feasible 20 meter cube ship is certainly doable. And, yes, stasis is undiscovered, but cryogenics could lead to a discovery. But quite possible, really.

Actually, 7,000,000,000 times 2 meters is 14,000,000,000 meters, or 14 billion kilometers.

Noooo...... That's 14 billion metres, or 14 million kilometres. Anyway, this is a cube, not a straight line.
