 Explosion Retexture

If we are going to have massive, epic battles between fleets of frigates and dreadnauts, we need a better explosion texture.

While i couldn't do anything this good without many hours of trial and error, someone either copied this into minecraft form or who knows, but i found this free to use explosion texture.



And in-game:

(can't upload ATM, imgur is down for server maintnence. will edit and upload ASAP)

And no, that white backround is not actually there. that's just how it copied in the image link.

It looks more realistic than the current one, but imgur is still down.

As would I, but apparently thats not how the explosions work.

Just realized, we should have different explosions for space, as opposed to planetside. No atmosphere and no gravity would give it a very different signature from its terrestrial counterpart. I'm not entirely sure what explosions look like in space, though.

I think in atmosphere it rises up, and in space it makes a ball.


and there should maybe 2 or 3 more different explosions, so it gives it some variety, so it all doesn't look the same.

Okay, looks like in space it's just a small flash and then its over, because all of the excited particles disperse nearly instantly. So that should be easy. I think we could also do some cool things with auroras if you used energy weapons in the upper atmosphere.

When you blow up a ship all the oxygen that was trapped inside is burning, so I think you can keep the explosions. Besides if I have a choice between realism and spectacular explosions I would choose the last - we are not building a simulator just a fun game to play. If it means to sacrifice such as small detail as this so be it.

I like the single bright flash idea though, make it look like the [big] explosions in the old Star Trek: Shattered Universe game.
