For example, can you be pulled into the sun, or thrown off course by a gravitational slingshot from a gas giant?

It's all too complicated I guess. What can be used is that gravity wells disallow you to jump away, so you have to get out of the gravity well in order to use your jump drives. They will also force ships out of hyperspace when they enter the gravity well. the jump point and then use it .This should help in adding some territorial / defensive gameplay . Also jump points should have their own smaller gravity wells that prevent you from jumping directly into it and use it right away.

1: Depends on how far away from the sun you are. If you are close enough not to manage to escape, you (and your ship) will melt because of the heat. So just use the ship's engines and keep away from huge glowing balls of burning gasses, will you?

2: What do you mean with "Gravitational slingshot"? Not even gas planets can shoot away gravity,(I guess) and if it could it would just pull you a bit closer to it. Then you would just have to use slightly more engine power and you are free from the planets gravity once again.

I believe that he is referring to a situation where a ship's trajectory would be altered by the planet's gravity. If one were close enough to the planet, you could be flying in a totally different direction when you got out of the gravitational pull. I'm not sure if we're referring to the same thing here. It would require complex math to calculate gravitational and centripetal forces fast enough to alter a ship's movement in real time, but I'm not a dev, so I wouldn't know how easy/hard this would be.

It's not hard to alter jump co-ordinates (Once a jump system is implemented ) , the problem is if players need such heavy math stuff in their game ... We are not in a physics lesson we don't rly need most of that crap .

Agreed -^

Although it would be kinda cool...

Orbital math is not computationally difficult, nor would it be difficult to give things realistic orbits in space. The hard part is going to be managing local entity interaction with different 'up' directions.

Yea G ( M*m ) / R^2 is not that complicated, just you'll have to spend your time calculating jump co-ordinates with a calculator Razz .

I think they originally planned to add those.

Slingshotting... Not possible. When you are on a rollercoaster, and the rollercoaster goes down, it never goes all the way back u p unless there is some force helping it. It always goes back up but not as far up as it went down. This is wha makes it so a bouncy ball does not bounce indefinitely. If you dipped a ship down into the atmosphere of a planet, you would not make it back to space unless your engines were firing. Doesnt even work in Minecraft. Very Happy Think abut the last minecart rollercoaster you made. You had to add some powered rails on the up parts, even if they were after a down.

There's no gravity or atmosphere to slow you down if you stay a few hundred kilometres away from the planet.

This is the concept of a gravitational slingshot...

You have a spaceship and approach the gravity well of a massive planet or body. As you approach it, you accelerate. You never enter the celestial body's atmosphere. As you start to pass the planet, you turn around it while tightening the turn, accelerating even more. When you reach the desired release point for the trajectory you wish to undertake, you pull out of the turn and shoot away from the planet with more kinetic energy than what you started with, which was supplied by the planet's gravitational energy.

It helps accelerate ships AND changes their direction easily.

NASA has used this several times in several missions, it works.

Oh, I've heard about that method! I used it in some computer game looong time ago. (I used Windows 98, which is about ancient times..)
