PostSubject: Deflectors   Sat May 19, 2012 3:33 pm

I will do this thread in a FaQ style.
Q: What is a deflector?
A: a deflector is a shield made to keep particles from penetrating the hull of the ship by deflecting them.

Q: Who uses deflectors?
A: mainly Star Wars and Star Trek ships
Star Wars uses them as a defense for battles, too.
Star Trek has big deflector dishes:

Stargate and BSG- ships may use them too but their canon sources don´t mention them.

Q: What are you asking the Devs to implement?
A: I actually want them not to implement something. Namely: Demage from micro-asteroids

Fr0stbyte has already said that microdebris will not be a problem.

If your hull can withstand an impact of a highly charged plasma ball it should survive some micro debris...

Do you know what a piece of dust can do at high speeds? Alot. If ships go at any significant potion of C, microdebries will be a problem.

I think you would have a special shield that takes no energy to deflect microdebris. Or, after every jump, you have to stop and repair your ship, like when traveling without shields in Spore.

Yea this dust will do a lot of demage, though much less than a plasma ball flying at the same speed towards your ship ...

A Plasma ball made of Gas with almost no mass
...For sure
Plasma is made To melt The Ship Not To Break through it

Only if your ship hull is made of a material with a melting point above 5778K

Yes, 5778 Kelvin. That's... uhh... 5505 degrees Celsius.

So I could make some sort of super high melting point sodium chloride ship, or some other ionic compound.

If you collide with a star, you're going to have a bad time.

I don't dislike the idea of deflector shields. If we have kinetic weapons available, it would make an interesting dynamic if deflectors were under more strain in areas with a lot of debris and therefore more susceptible to kinetic weaponry. A raiding party could exploit this by setting up snares in an asteroid belt and start raining tungsten down on their unsuspecting prey.

I supposed that your shield won´t stand that heat for long.
Try with a Sun Crusher.

I hence forth outlaw all mention of the "Sun Crusher". It is stupid and overpowered, and the next person who mentions it will get a two day ban.

He's a Super Moderator. Of course he can do it.

I just don't see the problem with the Sun Crusher. It's not that overpowered, because if you're in a ship, you can hurt it and it can't hurt you very well, either. I'm not saying it should be in the mod, but that's no reason to forbid discussion of it.
