So, everyone is pretty much in agreement that we are going to have FTL, right? And that each server will be a solar system, with randomized planets and such? And the night sky probably will remain relatively unchanged, right? Some of you probably see the problem already.

So, you can also travel between servers using FTL, but there won't be any non-server solar systems. And those servers probably would look just like another star if you arn't on that server(most of you probably realize the problem by now).

So, how do we explain not being able to fly to all but a few of the hundreds of stars visible in a average Minecraftian night?

We will most likely never have enough servers to fill all of those, there are easily hundreds of them, even the pratically famous IC2 has only a few dozen.

And thats the planetside view, in space you could probably see thosands of stars! FC is a amazing mod, I have no doubt we could have at least a hundred servers, but I don't think its possible to have more servers than Minecraft itself.

So, what are we going to do about this?

(This might sound dumb) I'm just taking a stab in the dark here, but what if we just randomly generated stars in the minecraft space? I'm not a Dev. So that might be harder than it sounds but could that not work?

Simple. Not every star is visitable.

I was thinking that if you go to a star that no-one has visited before that it would generate a planetless solar system there. You can still go there, but there is no way to build.

We just have to be careful to make sure the galaxy maintains a good ratio of planets to players to keep things interesting (and to avoid overworking servers).

LOL, +1 if I could.

Why no constructor ships? They'd be useful. There could be deconstructors, too, to deal with enemy structures once you've captured the planet. Or just before you capture the planet. It's more fun if the crew's still aboard when you begin deconstruction.

of course there are deconstructing ships. but they require the shields to be down and have no defense.

Just take the engines off... Same way you make an orbital installation.

Oh fine.

Either you stop finding ways to build in non-build areas, or we don't have extra star systems.

Why do there need to be non-build areas?

Well, that would require too much data.

For example, to get and build at point O...
X-----------------------------------------------------------------------O

You would have to fill in data for the -- area too. And we are data-tight.

this might be a noob comment but doesn't minecraft already have the ability to make almost infinite worlds? Couldn't we just use that ability and have servers become "factions" and save the world changes on the servers, allowing expansion to the empty solar system which just have planets that when unedited are remembered by their seed in order for a faction member to land/beam/fall/whatever onto a planet they need permission from their faction leaders and from some kind of interserver group that could give permission (probably just a group of Devs)

I know very little about coding so most likely this made absolutely no sense but I posted just in case I apologize for my noobiness

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Something about world generation->faction servers which have seeded planets, which require permission to access? That doesn't make any sense.

Ya never mind I didn't make any sense ignore that instead I have a question. Between point A and B what kind of data will needed to be loaded like data on what. Once more I apologize for my noobiness

Empty space data. But not nothing data. The way ungenerated land is compared to air. Ungenerated is, well, not there. Air is a placeholder for a real block.

Basically what everyone is saying is that if you want to build somewhere, a server has to host it. And if you are building off in a random corner of space, what server is hosting it? Up to this point the entire 'space' has been made up of server planet(s) and their orbitals, with 'portal' connections between them. Which is really the only feasible way of doing it.

Even out in the deep space boonies, it's going to have to be on someone's server. We've discussed having a cloud solution at one point, but really that is way beyond the scope of this project.

That's what I was trying to say at first but i just did a terrible job. Every person could belong to a home planet server (or possibly call the servers factions or whatever) and in order for you to colonize or mine an area, which would automatically make that area your servers burden, you would need permission from your server's (faction's) leader (or leaders). Possibly permission from a moderator or something like that as well. Hope that made more sense than last time. If this didn't make sense please tell me so I can shut up and stop making a fool of myself.
