Holographic map rooms have been on the list from the very start.

Yay!!! Is that going to work similar to how you are going to do ship construction?

I hope it's like the map room in Ringworld. That would be awesome.

I don't mind if all you did was add text, but you deleted a paragraph.

No matter. No matter.

Now, I do vaguely remember something about these holographic map rooms. But those are not computers, they are separate devices.

I can understand about built in wireless, but perhaps we would need to use a connector over longer distances, say 50 blocks plus, but forget about wireless/wired on ships?

I understand the text input, but it still needs to look futuristic. In my opinion, computers of the future will register hand gestures or use touch screens rather than use a keyboard and mouse.

In the future, I will think what I want and it will happen. Until then, we have to use something that these boring 21st century machines can understand. Unless you're playing on an iPad, I think you'll have to use a text interface.

I thought for sure that I was quoting, not editing... But whatever. I will look into the long distance thing. It would be easier to build if I actually had a ship to test it with...

You shouldn't need a ship world for that. Everything within a single ship will behave like a regular world.

Except for the fact that ships have unlimited wireless range, and that normal worlds would require a transmitter after a certain distance.
The solution to that would be, for testing the computers at least, to select either limited range or unlimited range depending on what you need before hand, perhaps as a menu option.

You know you could ask the guy who made ComputerCraft (an mp mod) about computers.
Just an idea.

That's not quite how they want to do it.

The idea of having to hire coders for your systems...

How about a downloadable Program creator that coders can use to write programs. An Interdimensional Downloader Block (or something like that) would be necessary to upload the program into the game and to put their program into a data carrier which can be put into and taken out of a computer by using a screwdriver. Every computer would not work without a program or with an invalid program. Some basic programs like "Fire all weapons!" or "Output Redstone when right password (would be defined when putting the program into the computer) is entered and stop when button is hit!" might be already available at the Interdim. DL-Block by default so servers who canĀ“t find a programmer would be able to use computers (to a limited degree), too.

ComputerCraft contains a LUA shell ported from what I'm guessing was C++ to Java via JNI or one of its fancy derivatives. Other than that, there's a handful of built-in shell scripts and a whole mess of interfaces. Which is not to say it's not a complex mod; it is. But it is also pretty straightforward in its implementation.

Beyond that, what exactly did you want to know?

I apologize for my necro, but this topic can't die. Computers are an important part of this mod, and they still need extensive work.

Here's how I envision FC computers:

Standard setup:
CLIENT:
1. A thin client is booted up by the user.
2. The user enters FCnet (FutureCraftNet?) address of a host server.
3. The user either:
--A. Enters a username and password (or other ID data)
--B. Presents some form of 'smart card' that contains username/password data that cannot be used otherwise
4. A terminal instance is streamed from the remote server.
SERVER:
1. The server operator starts a server instance that handles terminal instances that are streamed to a remote client.
2. If the server has never been started before (or is in data entry mode) the operator sets up user account data, network access, etc.
3. Optionally, the server can be started in Safe Mode, a mode that only allows communications with clients within a certain vicinity of the server or with certain predetermined clients.

Fat Setup:
1. A 'smart card' which contains an OS and software is inserted into the computer.
2. The computer boots, loading OS data from the inserted smart card.
3. The user uses whatever OS is present on the smart card, running programs either from the smart card or from a remote source (this includes running client software to connect to a remote server).

Appliance Setup:
(The appliance setup is basically a setup where the computer is used for one purpose only; to control a ship, fire a turret, jettison excess cargo, etc.)
1. The appliance is booted.
2. The appliance is connected to the system it is meant to control.
