So, most of you probably think ftl isn't directly possible(with normal laws of physics) because the energy required to reach lightspeed is infinite and to go above it requires more than infinite energy, but the latter is false. Speed is twosided and has a middle, nothing that was not created traveling at c will ever reach c, nothing created below c will ever go above c(these are called Tardyons), and nothing created above c will ever go below c(these are called Tachyons). Zero energy Tardyons have no motion, zero energy Tachyons have infinite motion, and the energy of both increase they move towards c. I'm going to ignore some things for simplicity though(like Tachyons traveling through time instead of space, those kind of things).

Tardyons and Tachyons do not interact, period. If they did we would of seen Tachyons by now.

The barrier c creates is called the Luxon Barrier, and is comparable to the sound barrier in how it was thought to be impassible, except that while we now know better than to think its impossible, we don't know how to pass the Luxon Barrier.

Physics on both sides of the barrier are thought to be identical, so if a ship was to somehow bypass the Luxon Barrier(as unlike the sound barrier passing it directly is impossible), it would function just fine on the other side.

So this is where my device comes in, the Luxon Bypass Device. The LBD functions on the amazing property of physics called the Rule Of Cool, which allows it to skip over the Luxon Barrier, enabling it to become Tachyons and pass uninhibited through any obstacles. To speed up, the ship slows down, and to slow down it speeds up, making navigation of Tachonian space difficult enough that it cannot be used willy nilly.

Powering the device requires a amount of energy proportional to the size of the ship, because to use the Rule Of Cool it has to be cool doesn't it? And a FTL drive that takes no energy isn't cool is it? And the larger the ship, the more energy is required to be appropriately cool.

Thus, FTL is possible without crushing the laws of physics too much, is easily ballancable, and we can put whatever we want in FTL space because not a soul in the world has a clue of what could possibly be there. Plus, if the time portion of Tachyon space is partially included that could make for a few interesting things. If you leave Tachyon space and forget something it would require great lengths to get it back.

Oh, and Startrek style warp bubbles don't work with quantum physics, the bubble isn't strictly impossible to form, but it would so badly ^\%& up low level(quantum) physics inside it that anything that anything made from smaller particles would be ripped apart. Including atomic nuclei. Would make for a excellent bomb though.

Wormholes wouldn't work too well either(this excludes stargates). Wormholes may not even exist, and if they do the openings are 3-dimensional and the 'hole' 4-dimensional. Ever try to shove a 3-d object through a 3-d opening and into a 4-d hole? The result isn't pretty. "The Fly" not pretty, except worse.

Stargates get around this by not sending anything larger than a proton through a wormhole, the visible surface isn't the wormhole but... well im not going to lecture you on how stargates work. Simply put assuming we have both wormholes and teleporters they would be perfectly possible ingame and irl, their very well explained and use very resonable technology barring the might-not-exist wormholes and might-not-be-possible teleporter technology.

I skimmed over it, then I made an attempt at reading it.

I read the entire thing. Too bad you do not know HOW to make the device turn the ship into Tachyons. RESULTS BUGGY! RESULTS AND ONLY RESULTS!
lol it was interesting.

I read that because it was interesting.

I do believe that we don't need that level of realism for most people.

Should the energy required to do an Luxon jump be the total energy of the ship?

Also, I hate to think what this would do to a ZPM, which relies on an inter-dimensional link to an artificial universe. (I do realize that you said the physics should still work the same, but I don't but that.)

In order:

This is accurate Relativity physics, but some complicated and confusing(and impossible) things were excluded, like time travel.

The LPD is how the ship is turned into Tachyons, it operates on the Rule Of Cool, look it up.

This is mostly just a backstory for how it would work and the name for it, we could make it look and sound any way we want, as well as put anything in Tachyon space we want. We could easily tweak the physics of Tachyon space if the backwards velocity thing is too confusing.

The energy requirement can be whatever we want, it operates on the Rule Of Cool after all.

Theres no telling for sure what this would do to ZPMs, but they would most likely be fine. Its not actually changing dimensions, just 'side'. Think of Tardyon and Tachyon space as opposite sides of the same coin.

I gathered that. Still, I would like to see some risk of cosmic implosion.

Was there ever a final word on the question of Interdictor cruisers?

Theres no reason there can't be risk. Oh, interesting tibit about zpms btw, turns out that their literal batteries, the energy required to produce the pocket dimension is equal to the energy that can be removed from it. Still, holding the equivalent of all of mankinds energy usage in a day in a 2 liter soda bottle sized object is pretty damn impressive, overall energy gain or not.

You learnt this where?

Tachyons aren't real and neither is Santa.

Well.. they are improbable, and could cause some violations of the cause/effect temporal-ness, but this is fiction.

Santa's not real? *Sniff*

Just kidding. But I still like the double present stuff.
