I do not know if this has been added or not but I think, we should make it so the mod has added layers into the ground. I think the ground should go about 150 or more blocks down. The sky could be the same for all I care. the lag would be fine enough with this idea.

Methinks the devs are crossing that bridge when they come to it; they're still grappling with the different concepts of worldgen and rendering at the moment.

The world will go much deeper than that, possibly kilometers, but the new render engine will be able to handle it.

Correct me if I'm wrong (Ffr0stbyte) but the method that Jeb/Notch use (the single chunk for height) uses a lot more resources from one's computer when implemented on larger height scales than the Cubic-Chunk method that we're using.

The save format is roughly the same as in cubic chunks. However, once the chunk is loaded from the harddrive into memory, it is still stored in a dense bedrock to skycap chunks like before. Even if 256 blocks were sufficient for our purposes, I would not want to use Minecraft's current chunk manager.
