Sure, try what hasn't been done ever before and just learn Java on the way there.

Anyway, you may want to try Python. As a starting language, it is beautiful.

Key word detection could work very well actually.

Fire all foward lasers= fire(primary command), all(modifying command, may or may not be needed if the default is to fire all of them anyway), foward(modifying command, fire only lasers on the "front" of the ship), lasers(parameter, fire only lasers)

The result? All foward lasers are fired. And this approach isn't too hard from what I understand.

I think this is a really good idea, but if it is implemented their needs to be a set parameters that can turn the AI rogue. I think HAL would make a wonderful rogue AI.

Remember the whole K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) Well I think that will work great with A.I.'s ( I think we should call them V.I.'s based on the whole definition thing
Virtual:
Almost or nearly as described, but not completely or according to strict definition: "the virtual absence of border controls".
Not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so: "virtual images".
Compared to
Artificial: Made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally, typically as a copy of something natural: "artificial light".
Not existing naturally; contrived or false: "the artificial division of people into age groups".

So, one is a simulation and the other is a recreation of. And seeing as we don't have any sentient computers I think we can stand to call them V.I.'s

In Mass Effect AI's are capable of critical thought whereas VIs are only made to control certain tasks, so I agree. But it should be called AI because most people will end up calling them that anyway, and its been said a ton of times that a majority of the players will favor accessibility over realism.

Yeah, also, offtopic, two questions:
1: what game is your signature from?
2: who is this?

The picture is 343 Guilty Spark, the Monitor for Installation 04 in Halo.

It there a difference between them? I've never played any of the games.

On an unrelated note, I feel obliged to point out that Shiva only enabled sigs a few days ago. We did not all simply discover them at the same time, amusing as that would have been.

*nod*

And that's 343 Guilty Spark from Halo 3 on The Ark arc of levels.

My signature/persona is Legion from Mass Effect 2/3. Speaking of which, I should really make my sig more epic. Remove the secondary picture and make words bigger/motion blur.

Great idea, Tiel/Legion. We do needs some sort of A.I to control various parts of ships, as the pilot in the control chair can't control the entire ship at once, and computers have limited controlling power.

Also, some sentient entities here MAY have duties to attend to, so I can't constantly pilot the ship, maybe an autopilot that just goes in a straight line, and MAYBE if the ship is attacked, its sends an email or something to alert the captain/crew. Maybe, something I just imagined up.

Maybe your ship needs more than one person to pilot, but you might not have 2 people on all the time at once so you might need to do something about that maybe, but maybe A.I. could control a lot of stuff or maybe not. This might solve the problem of doing everything at once, such as maybe maneuvering your ship and firing guns in combat, maybe.

Your ship sends an email when attacked? I want my ship to fire every single weapon it has, once, and then randomly jump out of the system.

I don't get it. This is the AI from ME2 (I think), but does it fight or something?

No, but after the events in the game she gets full control of the ship, which fits your parameters for a ship AI. I was going to use Cortana, and did a google search, but then I saw the first row of images and immediately closed the tab >_>

Haha did the same thing keon did it was rather entertaining
Spoiler:

Poor Cleverbot after the explosion he couldn't even spell. To make it so this isn't a completely useless post I'm going to say that I think having sentient AI crews would very difficult whereas diffrent types of robotic AI's would less complicated and any bug could be thought of as a "malfunction"

Did it again love this so much how can this be so stupid yet figure out what was going on in the end.

I definitely need one of these on my ship.
