So, I've been reading the
Halo wiki a lot recently, and I keep hitting the word 'Johntain'. It's in a ton of articles, always seems to be referring to Jiralhanae, and means absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. I can't find any references or definitions for it. Am I missing something here? It's used so consistently that I can't imagine it's just nonsense, but damned if I can figure it out. It frequently seems to be talking about Jiralhanae Chieftains, but the word does not appear on the Jiralhanae Chieftain page. It's occasionally used to refer specifically to Tartarus, the main enemy in
Halo 2 (usually as "Johntain of the Brutes", not just 'Johntain' as it is elsewhere), but it doesn't appear on his page, either.
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Chur%27R-Mut"Pellius then sent a mocking message to Thel, and Chur'R-Mut was no where to be seen, indicating that Johntain had overthrown her as well."
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Jiralhanae"A Brute becomes a pack Chieftain of the Jiralhanae by challenging the current Chieftain to a Mortal duel; the victor claims the title after executing the other. Johntain rules his pack like his own little empire."
"Brute Bodyguards are some of Johntain's most reliable warriors and not only protect their Chieftain, but enforce his tribal law."
"Brutes can use Machine Gun turrets with decent accuracy. This can be seen on Crow's Nest when you fight Johntain and his Brutes."
"In Halo 3, if a Brute Chieftain with a Plasma Cannon goes berserk, the Plasma Cannon disappears. When Johntain is killed, the same Plasma Cannon reappears by its body."
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Kovalic"When his evacuation vehicle was attacked by an Jiralhanae Chieftain, then Orbital Drop Shock Trooper Sarah Palmer SOEIV lands nearby and then she defends Kovalic from Johntain and other Covenant forces converging on their position."
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Ceretus"However, when Parabum's hunting party returned, Johntain was angered by Ceretus' disobedience, and so embarrassed him in front of the entire pack."
"Ceretus then began plotting to overthrow Parabum, but he had no hope of beating Johntain in a direct challenge."
"Ceretus got Facius to try to convince Parabum to return to the Covenant, with Hammadus promising to protect his brother if Johntain disagreed. When Facius spoke to Parabum however, Johntain responded by saying that there were no gods, causing Ceretus to erupt with pious indignation. Parabum then killed Ceretus with his Gravity Hammer."
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Jiralhanae_characters#Pellius"Pellius was Johntain of a Jiralhanae pack on the Kig-Yar ship A Psalm Every Day."
And so on and so forth. It appears in something like 50 articles across the
Halo wiki. It's used as a synonym for 'Chieftain', but I don't understand why they use a different word. Does anyone know anything about this? Some reference or joke that I'm not getting?
