PostSubject: Excessive rain.   Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:09 pm

So here in Colorado, it's been raining all week. HARD, all week. Like, foot deep water flooding in streets.

Well, now the basement is wet. We found the source, (well, I did) and the carpet is rather soaked. WHAT DO I DO!

I'm trying to get the carpet dry using towels and an old steam cleaner thing. The cleaner is rather ineffective, and the towels have to go through 30 minute drying cycles between soaking. I'm kind of desperate here, because very little progress is being made.

Ah, yes; I read about it on Reddit.

I've always wanted to use that pun.

For those who haven't heard about this yet, this is what the Peak-To-Peak Highway looks like right now. Being from Texas originally, I have no advice to give. Sorry.

Make a shrine to fr0st in the basement and prepare an offering of a rabbit's favorite foot at its base. Then kneel down on the soggy carpet and offer a prayer or two - note that the session must last six hours or more to have any discernible effects. No other members of your household should be present at this time unless they are participating in the ceremony - in fact it might be ideal to lock the cellar door so you are not interrupted.

I could provide a sample prayer or two, should you desire. If you have one on hand remember to transmit it to some electronic device such as a personal phone or laptop computer prior to beginning the service.

Sump-pumps are your friend, but if you don't have them already I dunno what to tell you. If only the carpet's wet you shouldn't have much of an issue. Get a big fan, one of the squarish white ones you can buy anywhere, and just have it blowing over the carpet. Depending on the carpet it may take a long time to dry, but if no more water's coming in it shouldn't be to bad. Depending on what your basement's like you may have to worry about mold. If it's all dirt and cement bricks and stuff it's not a problem, but if it's finished you may find yourself replacing the drywall and stuff. A dehumidifier is also a good investment in that situation.

That happened to us, there's still mold everywhere. It's probably going to be a long term thing, sorry

I guess I started the derailment too soon. Perhaps this will be the one thread that stays on track through the course of its life.

It's a foundation leak, and yes it's a finished basement... partially. There's drywall a 2x4 away from the concrete outer wall, the water came through a baseboard from a closet and such, as seen by the deformed-ness of it. I'm working on it now, but as far as I can tell, the basement started out completely concrete and bricks and was slightly finished.

Sump pump's an idea, but we already have a drain in the unfinished concrete part of the basement, and everything's along the east side wall, on the opposite side. We've got an extractor coming in like, hours, but IDK, the source closet smells slightly strange (Maybe it always was, idk)

And see, it's still raining, and we don't know if more water's coming in.

Get a few liters of antifungals and a few sturdy towels. You could also try to duck tape it up. Duck tape fixes everything.

Correction, isn't a foundation leak. It's coming through the door upstairs (directly above the closet), which we already know leaks.

And the basement is carpet, with a layer of carpet padding below, then a concrete flooring. I'm pretty sure mold won't be a problem, given this, unless the water doesn't dry out quickly enough.

The carpet padding will get moldy more quickly than you might expect if it's wet and not dealt with. Make sure you check it afterwards, and do your best to keep the basement as dry as possible in terms of humidity as well as actual standing water for a while.

Well, we've gone with towels, and they're pretty effective to a point. We've gotten the water to a point where it's not too wet, padding underneath the same. Not much we can do at the moment further, so we've put fans on it to see how it dries. Not dry by morning (including padding) calls for desperate measures.

As of now, it's been 6-7 hours since we found the flood, maybe 16 since it happened (maybe). Our sources say that we have 24-48 hours max until mold starts to take root and it becomes dangerous.

I'll update as events unfold.
