I don´t wanna be the one buying that thing tough.
Look at the price.
Now compare the $/GB with models with lower storage capacity.
Then compare $/GB to an external hard drive.
Result: You can get a 1TB USB-stick. However, it´s propably more of a (nerdy) prestige-product than anything else.

I know.
but we are actually talking about the 1TB variant here.
all other variants are unimportant.

I agree with Ivan. External HDDs provide the same functionality and are cheaper.

This is mostly for people that actually need a convenient stick to store over 900 gigs of data, hence why they cost a ton. They are more or less mobile SSDs, if you want to think of it from that perspective.

Well if we have USBs with 1 TB, that means we can get computers with 10 times that.
At least.

And the console neanderthals still need discs to store their everything...

Yes, Solid State Drives are essentially a bunch of flash memory put in an array, and they're wickedly expensive. They also fail after a certain number of read/writes.

Conventional hard disk technology will remain the top dog for a few more years - they do have 10 TB ones out there, I imagine, just cost thousands of dollars and thus only feasible for large corporations. It's much more practical to simply put a bunch of cheaper 500gb hdds in a RAID, however, which is probably what they do. The more spindles you have in a single drive, the higher the chance of failure.

So, I can spend US$2100 on a 1TB piece of flash memory, wickedly fast but easy to wear out, and more susceptible to catastrophic failure.

OR:

For about $100 more, I can buy 11 top-of-the-line USB HDDs, with USB 3.0 and 1TB of storage each. They're slower and more susceptible to wear and mild failures, but should they fail data recovery is more viable. They're also likely to last longer.

If I ever get $2200, I think I know which of the two I'd be buying.

People who say Snowden is a traitor are silly gooses. He had absolutely nothing to gain by blowing the whistle on the government's activities that violate the very tenets of our constitution, but did so anyway and is currently going through hell because of it. When it comes to deciding whether your loyalty lies with your government or your countrymen, it should always be the latter. He made the right choice.

Regarding Snowden, I think he did the right thing, but for the wrong reasons. Same thing with Manning. Either way the US is fast becoming a second USSR IMO, although strangely enough it's voluntary this time.

This post is going really offtopic, but in a good way. Let the offtopicness continue!

In my opinion, the US government needs to be overhauled almost entirely. As it is, it extends itself too far and leaves too much room for corruption. Something much more minimalistic would be far more effective.

Please note: I wrote this while watching Family Guy.

It's okay, we are in the off-topic section. Just be careful if LJS moves the thread to Members Lounge to silence your derailment.

Like putting me in complete control?

E: But in all seriousness I agree completely.
(I meant to add that but it was getting late.)

I'm a distributist/monarchist myself, but I agree with you. The libertarian/classic liberal ideals of the founding fathers have been completely destroyed since, as far as I know anyway, around the beginning of the cold war when we became culturally imperialistic. I really doubt anything will happen for the better, barring some sort of miracle akin to the 'Mule' in Asimov's Foundation trilogy, the bureaucracy's too entrenched. And what does family guy have to do with anything?

Well hopefully it wont go down to another argument about it, but for that matter see if you believe people do stuff here for ideals and justice you are wrong ... The only thing that is done out of the kindness of the heart is donations and sometimes even that not. See as I said Snowden carried away a whole computer of secret data, if we was just "FOR JSUTICE !" and "FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION !" and all of that he would just release that info he gave to the news and be done with it, he took a whole comp.

Now on the receiving side he got the Russian specs who won't offer him refuge unless he gives them that info, they were probably even ready to pay a good price for that together with all that refuge thing, he found his client for the info. I guess the Russians offered him a good price but if Iran was faster on the trigger and offered more, just imagine what would happen if that info got in THEIR hands, the USA is in deep s*** already couse of that info and if it gets to a hostile state they will use it, maybe to locate agent and execute them, maybe to organize a terrorist attack that will take hundreds or maybe thousands of lives if all planned well ...

So pick your deal: Do you want to know the truth or save a few hundreds of lives ? Your choice.

The main problem I see with US laws/system is the judicary system.
The founders could hardly have expected that to happen, considered the personal ideals of Lords were still the main law in the rest of the world at that time, but it appears that Lawyers are capable of abusing the juror-system to enforce that self-defence doesn´t require a threat or similar things (like deciding that the result of drying your pet in a microwave oven being the fault of the microwave producer), also a long line of Republican presidents has caused a quite extreme course. I'm actually surprised noone thought of making donations illegal ('the guys in the developing countries are responsible for their own fate, therefore donations are communistic'), but I guess that would be shining too bright of a light on what liberalism actually means nowadays.

Everybody is being to depressed. Go read Abundance or something. "If it ain't a nuclear war, then the world isn't gonna end, unless it's an asteroid from space, in which case give nasa all the funding it needs to deflect it", as my grampa used to say.

(Just kidding, he didn't.)

IMO we need to give NASA more funding anyway.
